I liked this book because I, too, am an Air a force brat. I kept thinking, as I read, "Yes, I know that feeling."
As an Air Force Brat myself, I expected more feeling and less Base description. Although the author is obviously a very well informed Officer's kid, she left a lot to be desired in the "I must read more" field. I was bored.
I am a career military dependent, I was born a military brat and traded in that ID card to become a dependent wife. Having spent 16 of my first 18 years in Europe, I thought I would click more with the author and her stories. Maybe it is because my mother is German, but I found myself frustrated when the author mention her mother not venturing out into the shops on the economy. Who freaking moves to France and doesn't suck in as much local culture as they can! She really lost me when she started insulting the DoD school system! It has been proven in testing that military schools score higher in testing than even the cream of the crop private schools, and that they send and graduate more student's from college than public or private. The fact that she couldn't tell time by age 11 screams more of lazy ads parenting that bad teachers!
Throughout the book she made references to French kids being liars, military school teachers being horribly inept, enlisted personal being to stupid for the brilliant officer's kids, all without explaining that this was just their thoughts as kids and oh, I don't know as adults her and her brothers now know better....
Okay, as a retired Chief's daughter, a former reservist, an officer's wife, and a trauma nurse, I'm going to stop the review before I get myself mad again and start lowering stars. The book is worth the read, but brats raised overseas may get upset with some of the statements made!
As an AF Brat and a Chief Master Sergeant's daughter who lived in France from 1962 to 1965 and at Chambley Air Base from 1963 to 1965 I felt I had to leave a review of this book. Obviously the author's parents looked down on the French people and also on enlisted personnel. Yes, France was dark and dreary in those years. The economy was depressed and more money was given to Germany as the vanquished to rebuild after the war. The French people my family met while living on the economy and on base at Chambley were warm and friendly. My family still maintains friendships with many of the French people we met. I remember when President Kennedy was assassinated and the sadness that was shared by our French friends. On the matter of the education of American dependent's overseas my experience was totally different while stationed in both France and Germany. Our teachers were required to have masters degrees in order to teach in Department of Defense schools. I consistently tested several grade levels above my actual grade in most subjects throughout my primary and secondary education as did both my siblings. I was looking forward to reading this book but sadly my expectations were not met due to the prejudice of the author against the French people and US enlisted personnel. Even though we lived in the same place at the same time our experiences were very different. The physical location was the same. The freedom to explore was the same. The difference is in our perception of the people and places involved. I'm thankful my parents were open to the wonderful experience of living in Scy-Chazelles for almost a year on the economy. I'm thankful for the amazing friends I have in France over fifty years later. Most of all I'm thankful for my parents who raised me to believe in judging people for who they are and not the rank they carry. My Dad was a lowly enlisted man but I am positive I got more out of my time in France than the author did.
Loved the book. Growing up military is such a unique experience. Each brat's story is unique, but Susan Kienan-Lewis did a great job making us part of her journey.
