Since early childhood, Verity has been haunted by the dream of meeting her twin soul. Is such a thing even possible? She thinks she might have found him in Ned, but is he all that he seems? No one and nothing in this novel is as straightforward as it first appears, including Verity. Sometimes it takes other people to help us discover who we truly are, and the lengths we will go to when pushed. A compelling psychological mystery with the notion of true love at its heart, The Other Twin explores the noxious legacy of suspicion, hatred, revenge, and duplicity – and asks of the reader just who can you trust?

The Other Twin is a wonderfully clever, rich and inevitably observational book from the pen of the truly talented Lesley Hayes. Her books are for me quintessentially English, but there is an incredible lilt to an American style that I enjoy immensely. One of my favourite authors is Henry James and I think in a previous review of another Lesley Hayes book I may have already made this comparison. But her style is much more, more modern, more engaging more Arthur Miller or Edward Albee than James I think.
Hard not to plot spoil but I may be forgiven for a name drop I hope. The central character Verity has always been looking for her non-existent twin soul from a young age. Whether soul or soul mate, early on it is hard to tell where this book will lead. Inevitable it leads to Love, love affairs, spite, misinterpretation, all the things that exist across relationships. The author develops multiple bi-lateral relationships throughout, all dysfunctional on some level, Verity always perhaps hopeful for a more perfect meeting of souls. Whether it is Verity and her mother, Verity and her husband Ned, her lover, her husband and his brother or her husband and his son and deeply scared daughter, Her husband and his ex-wife and dead wife, there are it seems always two in each relationship but of course, ultimately there are always more.
This is a gifted exploration of love in relationships but in particular it is an exploration of the brutality of betrayal. The narrative is as always with Lesley Hayes, simply stunning and the dialogue sharp and it constantly drives the story on. The end when it arrives, is a total surprise and it is a fantastic way to wrap up yet another simply magnificent book from one of my favourite authors. Lesley Hayes, take a bow, everyone else, pick this book up, a fantastic read.

Do we all search for love? In truth, is the search for love always burdened with questions that cannot be answered? THE OTHER TWIN is a narrative of flawed people each lonely, each in need, but also each able to give in their own way, at times if it is only selfishly. Lesley Hayes digs into the inner most depths of her characters' hearts exposing the good and bad in them in equal measures. A twisitng tale of new love, old love, adultery, and lost children that is a primer for what life teaches us can be gleaned from the sharp and not so kind aspects of love. Deeply moving....a portrait of the dark and confusing that begs to be held up to the light. A book for the serious reader by an author with a deep understanding of the human condition.
The Other Twin is a superbly written poignant story about love and marriage, its complexities and the ugliness of betrayal.

Verity was a happily married woman until she met a man who made her feel more alive than she had in a very long time. Her admirer was charming, fun, and understanding. He also felt like the twin soul whom Verity had dreamt about since childhood. Verity justified her time with this handsome stranger by convincing herself that he was only a friend. And, she certainly needed more of them! Although Verity told herself, that their luncheons were innocent, she knew deep in her soul, that any meeting with a man, held in secret from her husband, wasn’t innocent at all.

This book captivated me from the first page until the very last. The author brings the reader into the hearts and minds of her characters by describing their thoughts and emotions with razor-sharp acuity. Ms. Hayes, crafts this story, using her expert knowledge of the unhealthy mind. She sheds light on the true nature of her characters, their behaviors, and personality disorders; bringing clarity and understanding to the reader. This along with the author’s elegant writing style makes for a very enjoyable, rich, and enlightening reading experience. I loved it.

This is the second five-star book that I have read by Lesley Hayes, it surely, though, won’t be my last. Don’t miss reading this talented author’s work. Highly recommended.
What happens when an insightful and creative author gets together with a group of fascinating, yet dysfunctional characters? A great book and here’s yet another one from such a writer, Lesley Hayes, in her latest novel, The Other Twin — a beautifully written and intriguing love story.

When I saw that this, her most recent novel was available, I was astounded it had been completed so soon after her last great read, Dangerous People and before that The Drowned Phoenician Sailor. All are compelling books replete with characters that reflect the author’s psychological expertise in understanding people and how the mind can work to play tricks upon unsuspecting victims or manipulative and predatory villains. With such individuals filling her pages the reader can become so engrossed the story takes over and all else is forgotten or put aside. As happened to me.

I had a to-do list intended for that particular day and resolved to get started right after my coffee. Getting started for me is always an iffy proposition but it was certainly right up there as a resolution in the planning stage. With the day ahead of me, I decided I would get as much done as I could then relax with The Other Twin. It didn’t happen.

Once it was downloaded, I was curious. I wanted to see how it started. Then I wanted to see what came next. By then I was totally hooked. The to-do list was ignored on my desk and I took to the couch. After a few hours I left that to make a fruit smoothie and returned to the book. Dinner fortunately had already been made the day before and the most pressing things were feeding Gaia, my beautiful German Shepherd, and taking her outside to sniff and stretch her legs. After that and a few hours later it took no time at all to pour myself a glass of wine and heat the remains of my left over dinner. It was, after all, late in the afternoon and I needed something to sustain me as I continued to read.

Let’s just say that the day passed in one of those glorious periods of time when a really good book totally occupies your thoughts and the rest of the world and its happenings are abandoned. For me that was until about 130 am in bed the following morning! Until then I couldn’t put down what I had started the previous day.

The Other Twin totally deserves the description of a page-turner. Not only did Lesley Hayes generate yet another great read, she did it close on the heels of her last one. In awe of such prolific creativity I can only hope her next book is in the works to be published soon. When that occurs, I will be the first to consider any to-do list lying around as of secondary importance and indulge in reading yet another of her wonderful novels. The Other Twin is a five star novel at its best!
